NGO registration in Tanzania

Registration and Coordination of NGOs, Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups (NGO Registration (Ministry))

Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups

Official website Online portal

Overview

A division of the ministry registers and coordinates NGOs in Mainland Tanzania. It registers local and international NGOs, collects annual fees, annual performance reports and audited financial statements, and can deregister NGOs that do not comply.

Laws it works underNon-Governmental Organizations Act, Cap. 56 (2002)

How it works

All registration is online through the NGOs Information System (NiS). A local NGO needs at least five Tanzanian founders and submits its constitution, signed founders' minutes and a recommendation letter from the Assistant Registrar at the council or region where its office is. An international NGO needs at least five founders, two of them Tanzanian, and submits its constitution, home-country registration certificate, minutes and the same recommendation. After registration each NGO pays an annual fee and files annual performance reports and audited statements between 1 January and 15 April; late payment is fined. An NGO that neither pays nor reports for two years in a row is to be deregistered. NiS also handles annual returns, funding contracts, a public search and a map of NGOs.
