NGORA registers, regulates and oversees all NGOs operating in Malawi, to ensure accountability, transparency and coordination in the sector. Its values are professionalism, independence, accountability and a people-centred approach.
An organisation must register with NGORA before it starts operating. Registration is online through the MyNGO platform: applicants upload certified documents and proof of payment, and approval takes 14 working days when the documents are in order. NGORA keeps the official register, a database and a public documentation centre, with free public access to records and returns. It can withhold, suspend or cancel registration after a hearing, and appeals go to the High Court within 30 days. NGOs that close must notify the Authority with a board resolution, operations report and asset-disposal plan.
